Dear Readers, I have some exciting updates to share with you about my writing journey! First, I want to let you know that the Woolsey Saga is now complete, particularly in regard to the father-son story of Richard and William. If you haven't grabbed your copies yet, now's the time! While the saga has room for many more stories, and perhaps someday I'll explore our Revolutionary War soldiers or other amazing Woolseys, I don't have any additional Woolsey plans on the horizon at this time. Currently, I'm stepping way out of my comfort zone. I've decided to write a book for the Writers of the Future contest, and since it requires the story to be science fiction, futuristic, or horror, I'm venturing into completely new territory for me. The Crossing Hour is a supernatural thriller that follows Clara Whitmore, a recently divorced contractor who buys the mysterious Willowshade House in 2064. What starts as a post-divorce fresh start quickly becomes something far more complex when Clara discovers the house is haunted. As Clara renovates the house, she encounters the ghostly inhabitants—some are helpful, others are mischievous pranksters, and one harbors dark intentions. But these aren't ordinary ghosts. Through ancient protective symbols carved into the house's beams, Clara can actually travel back to 1864 and witness the living family as Union troops approach during the Civil War. The deeper Clara digs into the house's history, the more she uncovers about her own identity. In a shocking revelation, she discovers she's actually descended from slaves who once lived in this very house—a truth that completely upends her understanding of herself as a white woman. The house called to her blood, drawing her home to complete unfinished business. Clara learns that the protective symbols successfully saved the family from the Civil War dangers, but they came with an unintended consequence—trapping the souls of anyone who dies in the house. Now, 200 years later, Clara realizes that freeing her ancestors may require the ultimate sacrifice. This supernatural tale blends time travel, family history, and personal redemption—definitely fitting the contest's requirements while challenging me as a writer in exciting new ways! And while I'm working on this new project, don't forget to check out Where the Compass Points if you haven't already. Thank you for continuing to support my writing adventures, even when they take unexpected turns! Amy Crooks |
